Top Shelf is moving (not closing!)
After 49 years Top Shelf is experiencing some very big changes. We aren’t going out of business, but we are moving from our home base in the Lyn Lake district for the last 25 years. We’ve sold the building and are changing the business model with an eye toward the future. The news has already been erroneously reported that we are closing the business but that’s not the case. Top Shelf is moving into a fantastic new showroom in the North Loop at 333 N. Washington Ave, in the Union Plaza building. We were invited to bring Top Shelf into what will be a shared space with Daniels Custom Clothing. The owner, Daniel Stensgard of Daniels Custom Clothing has been in business for 35 years. Less than two months ago he leased a new space in the North Loop and designed and built out one of the most beautiful custom-only showrooms to ever grace the Twin Cities. Two seasoned veterans are joining in the North Loop, continuing to provide the finest custom clothing experience available in the Midwest.
What does this mean for existing customers?
We’ll continue to accept orders from existing customers whose records we have carefully maintained from at least the last 10 years. Starting Feb. 1st, appointments for sales, fittings and deliveries will all take place at the new location. We will go back to accepting new clients once the dust settles and we get set up. We’ll continue to operate our work room at our old location for a few months, to complete our custom orders, alterations and the special projects we have in works. Our workroom will eventually be moved into the new location along with our staff of tailors.
Why is this happening?
If you’re interested in what precipitated this move, please look for a new blog post which speaks to some of the reasons we are making the changes. This move is a positive change and one that has came about quickly. Sadly, online articles and newspaper articles have been been either totally inaccurate (no fact checking) or written from an angle suggesting that our business had fallen on hard times because of the demise of formal dress codes inside corporations.
A Word About Alteration Services
We stopped accepting retail alterations a few years ago and only accept work from our custom clientele. We’ve been referring clients for the last several years to alteration shops, such as Tailors on Blake in Hopkins and Sew Biz in downtown Minneapolis which are owned and operated by alumni of Top Shelf, and have heard nothing except good things about them. There are a few other tailor shops we can also recommend.
We are very grateful for all the loyalty and support over the last 49 years. It’s time for the next chapter!
The best way to reach someone during transition is to send an e-mail to John@TopShelfInc.com and he’ll respond as promptly as possible.
Sincerely, John and Pat Meegan
